Transferring programs from the Department of Education to other agencies will not fix the problem

We applaud the Trump administration’s intentions, but the federal government needs to get out of education entirely and give the power back to the states and local communities.

In his March 20, 2025, executive order, President Donald Trump called for the closure of the U.S. Department of Education and the delegation of the programs back to the states.

A federal appeals court on June 4 rejected the Trump administration’s motion for a stay in a lawsuit challenging the dismantling of the department. This effectively halted, at least temporarily, the reduction of the agency’s workforce and the transfer of some education responsibilities to other federal departments.

We applaud the Trump administration’s efforts, but the federal government needs to get out of education entirely and give the power back to the states and local communities.

There is no reason to believe that a different government department can manage education from D.C. any better than the Department of Education. No federal department should be involved at all.

The administration had argued it could still carry out the statutory requirements of the Education Department, even with a workforce cut in half. But the First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed, saying it saw “no basis” that a lower court erred in concluding that the task seemed “impossible.”

The U.S. Department of Justice asked the U.S. Supreme Court on June 6 for an immediate pause on a court order that the Education Department reinstate nearly 1,400 employees fired during a mass workforce reduction in March.

The president’s executive order, ‘Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities,’ clearly states that education must be returned to the states. It also requires the Education Department to ‘terminate illegal discrimination obscured under the label “diversity, equity, and inclusion” or similar terms and programs promoting gender ideology.’

We at USPIE like where the administration is trying to take us, but we are adamant that the sprawling, federal educational ‘blob’ not take root in other agencies.

It is the vision of USPIE to create a culture where parents, empowered with the authority to choose what and how their children learn, are the undisputed primary educators of their children, where local schools operate in support of families, and where education is unencumbered by federal mandates.

USPIE’s powerful documentary, “Truth & Lies in American Education,” addresses some of the most glaring issues in the American education system and equips parents to make a change in their local school district for the betterment of their children. “Truth & Lies in American Education” is available for streaming on SalemNOW, as well available on DVD.

USPIE’s podcast, “Unmasking Government Schools with Sheri Few,” is a weekly podcast that exposes the dangers of education shaped by government bureaucrats and social engineers, while exploring practical ways to protect children and preserve America’s freedom. Listen to “Unmasking Government Schools with Sheri Few” on YouTube, Facebook, Spotify and X.
