Liberal Michigan lawmakers earn USPIE’s ‘Millstone of the Month’ award for hijacking bipartisan school bill
Michigan liberal legislators have rammed through a gun control measure by inserting it into an omnibus school spending bill and then throttling dissent.
House Bill 5503, which provides critical funding for Michigan schools, was amended to create an anonymous tipline for students to report the “unsafe” storage of firearms.
The bill was pushed through both the House and Senate within hours on September 25. Legislators were prohibited from speaking on it from the floor when it came up for a vote. This effectively silenced any opposition.
“These cynical legislators view children as a vehicle for their radical agenda,” said Sheri Few, founder and president of United States Parents Involved in Education (USPIE). “This sets up kids to report their own parents. That’s why USPIE is giving Michigan’s liberal legislators the October 2024 Millstone of the Month Award.”
The Millstone of the Month Awards are given to the person or people who have committed the most egregious acts against children in government schools.
This legislation in Michigan allocates up to $1 million to establish a tipline.
Under the proposed law, students can anonymously report their parents or legal guardians for “improperly” stored firearms that are accessible to minors. The penalty in Michigan for a violation is a misdemeanor punishable by time in jail and a fine — with provisions that can rise to a felony offense.
“This ‘tipline’ could result in unwarranted interactions with law enforcement and unfettered searches of homes, business and other places where firearms could be stored,” Few said.
“There is little surprise that anti-Second Amendment lawmakers wanted to rush this ill-conceived idea under the cover of a larger omnibus style bill with no debate or time for deliberation.”
Calling it “state sponsored manipulation of your children,” Gun Owners of America said in a release that “the state of Michigan has now decided to try and turn your children against you by having them report on your private gun storage. This is unacceptable.”
HB 5303 will soon be sent to the desk of Michigan’s Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for her to sign — or reject.
“It’s critical that Michiganders contact the governor today to urge her to veto HB 5503,” Few said.
United States Parents Involved in Education (USPIE) is a nonprofit, nationwide coalition that seeks to return education to its proper local roots and restore parental authority over their children’s education by helping parents and local communities to escape federal and other national influences. It is the vision of USPIE to create a culture where parents, empowered with the authority to choose what and how their children learn, are the undisputed primary educators of their children, where local schools operate in support of families, and where education is unencumbered by federal mandates.
